Conor mac Arden has found happiness with his beloved Aoife as they build a new life together in the community of Tara's Hill. However, he hasn't forgotten the ever-present threat of the Sclda, who are determined to conquer the nation of Eirlandia. The Sclda's chariots give them a nearly unbeatable advantage over the Celtic clans. On a more personal level, Conor doesn't have the best relationship with his brother Liam, which may come back to bite him. Can our hero pull together his war band and find allies among the faery in time to save his people? Lawhead ("Song of Albion" series; King Raven Trilogy) focuses on creating a believable setting based on Celtic mythology, but one-dimensional characters and the most basic of plots make for less compelling storytelling. VERDICT Wrapping up his "Eirlandia" trilogy perhaps a little too neatly, Lawhead offers a tale that should satisfy his fans but is unlikely to garner him new ones.--Laurel Bliss, San Diego State Univ.
