A teen girl and her robot embark on a cross-country mission in this illustrated science fiction story, perfect for fans of Fallout and Black Mirror.

In late 1997, a runaway teenager and her small yellow toy robot travel west through a strange American landscape where the ruins of gigantic battle drones litter the countryside, along with the discarded trash of a high-tech consumerist society addicted to a virtual-reality system. As they approach the edge of the continent, the world outside the car window seems to unravel at an ever faster pace, as if somewhere beyond the horizon, the hollow core of civilization has finally caved in.

Stlenhag is an internationally celebrated author and artist from Sweden, best known for his highly visual sci-fi/apocalyptic works. His latest is a graphic novel, and the audiobook version is the perfect accompaniment for the print edition. Listeners get a PDF of images that go along with the story, and it's highly recommended to view those while listening to this production. The novel follows a teenage girl and her robot as they travel through the ruins of the United States. As they pass trashed battle drones, weird discarded technology, and the disturbing emptiness of the continent, a growing sense of unease and dread forms. What has become of civilization? This deeply unsettling, postapocalyptic story, which is at times puzzling and feels sparse, has its illustrations brought into focus by Shaun Taylor-Corbett and Sura Siu's calm, steady narration. VERDICT Fans of postapocalyptic sci-fi will eat up this excellent novel. Note that the audiobook's PDF of illustrations (or a print version of the book) supports a more immersive experience; Stlenhag's imagery is a key component of the story.--Erin Cataldi
